May 27 Meeting Summary

Pat Reynolds, shown here with her piece Spring Splendour, was our speaker at the busy last meeting of the year, which included the formal AGM, a dessert potluck, and the winners of our second Presidents' Challenge. Please scroll down to see all the winners with their journal quilt entries.

Pat shared her quilting journey with us, which started in 2000 as a knitter making a sweater with a quilted body, and ended with her most recent art show submission, dimensional art featuring tree bark and leaves. Pat’s trunk show presentation was supplemented with a slide show of additional pieces. Techniques included bargello, colourwash, convergence, applique, thread painting, embroidery with dimensions added through scrunching, fabric weaving, trapunto and machine quilting. Pat’s work has all been done on a domestic machine!

Some of Pat's colourwash pieces included up to five hundred 1.25 – 2” squares in the background. On many of these complex and detailed projects, she makes two at a time! (Easy to do two when you have all the supplies collected, and you would probably never do it again -- smart lady.)

Nature has been the focus on Pat’s projects – with osprey, loons, trees and moving water expertly depicted with metallic or reflective threads and crystal embellishments. The architecture of old barns and buildings (school houses, log chutes and dams) are another subject that Pat has worked on in smaller wall hangings that are created using her “Building Blocks” process.

Pat is an active member of the Haliburton Highlands Quilt Guild and teaches several techniques through quilt shops and guilds. What a treat to have Pat visit and display this amazing range of prize winning creative treasures to our members. You can find Pat's website at We hope that your creative juices were inspired!

There was certainly lots of creativity shown in the entries for our second Presidents' Challenge. The challenge was to produce a journal quilt, which is a small quilt, about 8.5" by 11". First prize went to Marj, for her piece "Quilt Out Loud:"

Penny won second place with "Lavender Fields:"

And Lisette rounded out the top three with "Zendoodle Chick:"
