April 22 Meeting Reminder

Our speaker this Monday will be Garnet Smalley, from the London International Quilt Festival. Garnet will be presenting the trunk show "Out of Africa," which features many of the quilts from Africa that will be displayed at the London International Quilt Festival June 12-15, 2013.

At the break, Garnet will be selling a selection of fat quarters and jelly rolls, as well as batiks on the bolt for $10 per metre. Payments by cash, cheque or credit card will be accepted.

While you are at the meeting, why not take a few minutes to learn more about one of the open positions that we have on the Executive for next year? Whether you are a long time member or new to the guild, we will appreciate your help! The following positions are open:
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Facilities
  • Newsletter
  • Social
  • Display (Show & Tell)
  • Library
  • Block of the Month (yes, it's open again)
Also, for Bee Night we have one volunteer, Elaine, who would like a partner to share the position. Plus, the Quilt Show Planning Committee still has a few open spots, so you may speak to Lisette about those. There's plenty of opportunity to be involved!

And as always, don't forget to
  • Bring in your completed Block of the Month,
  • Sign up for the last Bee Night of the year,
  • Bring in your completed Quilts from the Heart project,
  • Sign up for one (or both!) of our upcoming workshops,
  • Return your library books, and borrow up to 3 more for the next month,
  • Bring in your recently completed project for Show & Tell. Remember, only projects brought downstairs before the meeting can be photographed.
  • And, bring your own mug for coffee or tea downstairs at the break.
See you there!

April Bee Night Photos

At the April Bee Night Laura taught us the new technique of self binding baby blankets that you see here. The self binding method is quick and easy and produces surprise mitred corners after a few strategic stitches and clips. This method can also be used to make other handy gift ideas as well such as table runners and placemats.

New Library Books

Our Librarian Frances has been busy acquiring some new books for the RVQG library. The library can be found on the lower level at most general meetings. Borrowing privileges are restricted to members only. For full details on the procedures, please visit our Library page here.

One of the great "perks" of being the RVQG Librarian is that you have quite a bit of discretion in how to spend the new books budget each year. This is Frances' last year as Librarian, and we are looking for a volunteer to take it over for the next two years. Please email us at rvqginfo@gmail.com to learn more or to volunteer.

These are some of the new books we've received:

Schnibbles Times Two, Quilts from 5" or 10" Squares, by Carrie L. Nelson

Another Bite of Schnibbles, 24 Quilts from 5" or 10" Squares, by Carrie L. Nelson

Best of Fons & Porter: Tabletop Quilts, by Fons & Porter

Oh My Stars, by Marci Baker

130 Mini Quilt Blocks, by Susan Briscoe

Scrap Basket Sensations, by Kim Brackett

Successful Scrap Quilts from Simple Rectangles, by Judy Turner and Margaret Rolfe

March 25 Show & Tell Photos

We had a nice selection of projects at Show & Tell on March 25. Elaine brought in her beautiful miniature quilt, "Complementary Stars":

It is only 12" square, and the inner purple border is 1/4" wide! Please click the link or scroll down to see the rest of the projects.

March 25 Meeting Summary

Our March 25 speaker was Brenda Miller of Among Brenda’s Quilts & Bags – Designer extraordinaire!

Brenda provided a trunk show with bags, quilts, table runners, place mats and wall-hangings galore, featuring a vast range with something for everyone. Brenda’s bags contain a wide variety of functional pockets, zippers, drawstrings, decorative rings, elastics and even one with a soft waterproof liner used for a cooler bag or baby change pad. Brenda’s beautiful bag samples demonstrated their multi-functionality appropriate for either a little girl, or a ladies elegant evening bag – all determined by the fabric and embellishment choices. Members were in awe of the “Monster Bag” that could hold up to two queen sized quilts! Brenda noted that this bag has two handles, which would allow sharing the load, if it got too heavy for one.

Working with Hoffman fabrics of California, Brenda developed several quilt patterns using either Bali Pops, or 5” squares from Hoffman. Brenda also designed a series of patterns with red work embroidery. Quilt patterns ranged from traditional rail fence inspired to modern solid colour combinations, block of the month and quilt-as-you-go styles. Brenda’s inspirations included her pets (cat and dog), international influences (Oriental, Mexican) and even candy – McIntosh’s toffee box colours. The range of styles was impressive!

Brenda offered her patterns, notions, fabric and bag supplies for sale during the break, with the help of her friend Janet. Many members lined up to purchase new project plans and supplies. We hope to see some of the finished projects in the near future!

The last Block of the Month for our 12 month Calendar Quilt was distributed at the meeting. The butterfly design is courtesy of The Quilter's Cache. It is available now on our Block of the Month page. Now that all the blocks are finalized, we are looking forward to seeing some completed tops at future meetings!

The next Bee Night, "All Things Baby," is already full. Stay tuned to hear what's scheduled for the last Bee Night of the year in May.

We are recruiting for several positions on the Executive Committee:

  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Facilities
  • Newsletter
  • Social
  • Display
  • Bee Night
  • Library

And there are two positions left to fill on the Quilt Show Committee as well:

  • Show Program/Activities
  • Guild Auction/Fundraising

To volunteer or just to learn more about any of the positions, please email us at rvqginfo@gmail.com.

It was another great meeting! Watch for the Show & Tell photos later this week. Until then, happy sewing!
